The following services are typically delivered from May to October:
Grading and Shouldering |
Granular roads are graded 4 times per year or more depending upon the impact that the weather and traffic has had upon the condition of the roadway. Early spring grading is light in nature to rid the road of the pot holes. Late spring grading is to shape the road and prepare it for dust suppression and base stabilizing calcium chloride applications. If all goes well, there will be a late summer grading and finally a fall grading to prepare the roads for winter travel. In general, you cannot grade when the road is wet or about to be wet. Shouldering is performed on an as-needed basis in response to heavy runoff caused by spring thaw or heavy precipitation and related washouts. |
Granular Lift Program |
In May and June, granular material is applied to approximately 15-20 km of selected roads in conjunction with the grading program detailed above. |
Dust Control/Base Stabilization |
Calcium Chloride is applied to freshly graveled roads and newly graded roads from May to June. This activity reduces the dust generated from traffic and helps maintain the graded shape of the road in the summer months. |
Patching |
Hot or cold mix material is used in filling potholes, depressions, and to restore road edges. |
Roadside Mowing |
Roadside grass is cut back from the shoulder in June and July to provide proper driving sight lines. |
Brushing and Ditching |
These activities take place on selected lengths of roadway when drainage is impeded and or growth begins to impose on the driving envelope. |
Sweeping |
Hard-Top roads are swept in April and May, preferably when wet to keep dust to a minimum. |
Culverts |
Culverts that direct drainage to the opposite side of the road are replaced when they have corroded and no longer drain properly, and may also be unable to properly support the compressive forces of road traffic. Entrance culverts on driveways are the responsibility of the land owner. |
