Location: 131 Fallbrook Road, Balderson Hamlet
Legal Description: Lot 27, Concession 7, Bathurst Ward
Balderson United Church is recognized for its age of over 100 years, its classic Romanesque style, its late 19th century Presbyterian Church elements, and its long role as a religious and social centre for a wide area of the community.
Built in 1904 as a Presbyterian church, the building is characterized by its façade, with a representation of local blue limestone, sandstone and fieldstone; by the interior walls and furnishings, constructed of local soft and hardwoods; and by the imposing nave (laity area). The majestic stained-glass windows, featuring a display of Christian imagery, were donated by members of the congregation, as were many of the furnishings.
This church united the Bathurst Presbyterian mission, dating from 1834, and the Drummond Presbyterian mission. In 1925, it joined the newly formed United Church of Canada, combining Union-Congregationalist, Methodist and Consenting Presbyterian churches. It also eventually encompassed the churches at Harper, Playfairville and Prestonvale. Over its 100+ years, the church has also been home to numerous community groups.
