On this first National Day for Truth & Reconciliation, events are taking place in the following local
communities:
Almonte
From 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Mississippi Mills All My Relations will be facilitating a vigil at the Old Town Hall. This will be an
opportunity to reflect on our relationship with Indigenous Peoples and how we can participate in renewing our friendship. People are welcome to step into the circle for a little while, to participate in a reading, to light a candle –to come and go as they are able. Carleton Place
An Evening of Reflection on Sept 30th 6pm-8pm, which is open to all and will be focused on messages of compassion and healing at the Carleton Place Labyrinth (267 Edmund Street, Carleton Place). Attendees will be welcomed to walk the healing labyrinth and read messages of support/compassion/healing on our lit luminary bags, as well as view our display of tiny orange shirts that residents are creating. Elder Terry McKay from the Odawa Aboriginal Community Justice Programme will be speaking at 6:00pm and will be sharing the history of life leading up to Residential Schools, the history of residential schools in Canada, and the path to reconciliation. Perth
ORANGE SHIRT DAY commemorates the terrible harm done to Indigenous children who attended residential schools in Canada. We gather on September 30th to listen and learn about the impact of residential schools on those who attended, on those who died there or trying to get home and on those whose parents and grandparents bore the terrible scars of what they endured. We will be starting with a Opening circle at 2:00. There will be a Storying Sharing/Reading Tent, Library books by Indigenous authors available to sign-out, information on Kiizhik Learning Centre by SchoolBox North, donations will be accepted, an art display and a movie tent showing residential school based videos. The closing circle will start at 4:00.
