Indigenous Plaque Dedication Ceremony: Register to join us at the ABC Hall on June 11 at 11am
In the summer of 2021, the Lanark County Neighbours for Truth and Reconciliation, with the support of Tay Valley Township, installed an Indigenous plaque in Bolingbroke. It tells the story of Chief Shawinipinessi, who tried to legally secure an area of land for the Algonquin people from the Dominion of Canada and protect it from persistent timber harvesting. The attempt was ultimately unsuccessful but the vision, courage and persistence of the man who tried to make it happen remain an important part of local history.
The public is invited to the Sunday, June 11th plaque dedication ceremony taking place at the ABC Hall from 11am to 2:30pm and sponsored by the Tay River Algonquian Community, the Lanark County Neighbours for Truth and Reconciliation, and Tay Valley Township. The event will include an opening ceremony with the Lanark Drum Circle and stories of the efforts made by Chief Shawinipinessi as told by his descendants. A light lunch will be provided by The Table Community Food Centre.
