Yesterday, almost 120 Indigenous VIPs and guests, Tay Valley Township residents, volunteers and councillors came together to recognize the importance of Indigenous heritage and contributions within—and beyond—our community.
The day was spent listening to the stories of descendants of Chief Shawinipinessi, an important historical leader of the Algonquin/Omàmìwininì People, participating in a plaque dedication ceremony to commemorate local Indigenous heritage, and sharing in a communal meal and conversation.
June is National Indigenous History Month. Events such as these are key to strengthening a shared awareness of the past and advancing our common goal of reconciliation.
