The Township is pleased to announce receipt of a funding grant from the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Culture. The grant will be used to create a map of the area’s cultural heritage landscape. The map will identify places that are important to the history, culture and landscape of Tay Valley.
We are looking for help from residents to locate special places including: old school houses, cheese factories, ice roads, Aboriginal trails, century farms, mines, artist’s studios, etc. We are also interested in collecting the traditions, stories, and unique factors in the community that help to shape Tay Valley Township’s identity.
Sites and features with important cultural heritage will be located using GPS technology and then photographed and documented. The data collected will be available for public viewing on a website. The website will showcase a database of the heritage sites as well as maps, and possibly podcasts of interviews with the residents.
We are looking for information on the hamlets (Stanleyville, Maberly, Bolingbroke, Dewitt’s Corners, Brooke, Glen Tay, Fallbrook and Balderson), and the smaller settlements (e.g. Harper, Feldspar, etc.) as well as the surrounding rural areas. Members of the community are asked to participate in the project by sharing any knowledge of our cultural heritage in Tay Valley Township.
