Tay Valley Township Council received a verbal presentation at a recent Council meeting from two Canada World Youth students who undertook waste audits at the Township’s three waste sites.
Julia Ruiz of Honduras and Julie Noirfalise of Montréal have been living and volunteering in Tay Valley Township since August and are being hosted by Councillor Bill Avery, a retired teacher, and his family.
The waste audits, which involve opening garbage bags and sorting and weighing the contents, revealed some good news. Little or no hazardous waste, such as batteries, is being disposed with regular garbage and most recyclables are being sorted and separated. However, the Township’s Waste Advisory Committee will be looking at ways to encourage greater composting at home. The audit revealed a high level of compostables which reflects a high level of wasted food. Eliminating waste, or at least composting and reintroducing the nutrients to our soils, is the more responsible approach.
At the Council meeting, Ms. Ruiz spoke of the contrast between Honduras and rural Canada. She commented that waste sites in Honduras are home to hundreds of poor and homeless people who depend on the waste as a source of food. Her comments were a reminder of Canada’s quality of life.
Reeve Kerr thanked the participants for their efforts, stating:
“I extend a heartfelt thank you to Julia and Julie for their efforts. The waste audits provided the Township and our Waste Advisory Committee valuable information to help us in our efforts to divert more recyclable and organic material from our waste sites.”
Councillor Avery added:
“These young people have learned from this valuable experience about waste and sustainability. We will continue to strive to ensure greater diversion. The contrast between Honduras and rural Canada is quite staggering. ”
